Early Life and Family Background

Matthew was born on November 20, 1973, at Oakland Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California. He is the son of Peter and Nancy Bissell. His father, Peter Bissell, worked as a longshoreman in the Bay Area for multiple decades and was a proud member of the ILWU. His mother, Nancy Bissell, followed a career path that blended education and entrepreneurship, beginning as a Special Education Teacher before opening and operating a local clothing store.

Matthew grew up with one sister in a household that valued routine, responsibility, and mutual support. As a child, he spent much of his free time with friends and participating in youth sports. Growing up in the Bay Area allowed him to play football, baseball, and soccer year-round. These activities introduced him to teamwork, discipline, and commitment early, lessons that later carried into adulthood.

Education and Academic Development

From 1991 to 1995, Matthew attended Pitzer College in Claremont, California, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. During his time at Pitzer, he was also a student-athlete, playing baseball and football for the Pomona/Pitzer teams. In 1994, he earned First Team All-SCIAC honors in football, contributing as a defensive end, punter, and placekicker.

Balancing academic responsibilities with athletic commitments required strong time management and focus. Matthew has reflected that this period helped him learn how to push through mental challenges while managing a demanding schedule. These skills later became useful across his professional roles.

In 1994, Matthew spent a semester abroad at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. While studying there, he traveled through Europe, Africa, and Asia, visiting Spain, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Germany, and the Netherlands. Exposure to different cultures and perspectives broadened his understanding of how people live and work in varied environments. After completing his undergraduate studies, he pursued additional academic coursework at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California.
